How I can help you

That sounds interesting! But what do you do?

Simply put – I work with you (not on you) to find ways to reduce pain, stress and improve function – from abstract thinking to zulu dancing.

‘That’s quite a claim’  you’re thinking. ‘No one can be an expert at so many things’.

True enough. But what I do  is not about ‘experts’;  it’s about collaborations.  A nice analogy might be to think of canoes.

If you’ve never stepped into a canoe before, you’re in for quite a surprise.

The challenge of keeping upright more often then not leads first timers to fall into the water – and never mind actually getting anywhere.

Imagine, however, that another person – someone who’d been in a canoe before – was helping you.  Every ill placed zig is met with a counter-balancing zag. Every off stroke of the paddle is matched by a smooth movement from your guide.

Pretty soon, through this wordless communication, you’d pick up the skill of canoeing. What once had been an exercise in frustration becomes  easy and even pleasurable.

Ok, so  how do you do that?

What I do is called Feldenkrais. It’s done in  two ways. The first is called Functional Integration.

Functional Integration (FI) is a hands on interaction. After discussing with you your particulars and what you’d like to work with, we observe you performing the action/s. Then, using this as a ‘before’ snapshot, we work together to see if we can find ways to improve.

Typically, a person sits or lays comfortably (and fully clothed) on a low padded bench. Using gentle – but novel and unusual movements – we work together to find different ways to do things. The goal is always one of more ease, more grace and more ability. There are no clicks, pops or sudden twists. FI is not like massage, chiropractic or physical therapy

The second way is called Awareness Through Movement (ATM). During ATM, I guide  a group through a puzzle that relates to an activity. For example – how would you stand up without putting pressure onto your knees?

How could turn more easily? How could you find a way to use your skeleton to support a load, instead of your muscles? How can your eyes help you move more fluidly? What happens to your breath when your under stress? How can you multitask without frustration or effort? How do you improve your golf-swing?

Each lesson is tailored to give the group a concrete, real, physical experience of what change means – and tools to enact it for themselves. Even the very young – and the not so young – can get something out of the experience.
